Studies on the pollen tube penetration, fertilization, and pro-embryo formation of Calystegia soldanella R. Br. were carried out and some of the results are summarized as follows:
(1) Thirty minutes after pollination, the pollen on the stigma germinates and begins to penetrate into stigmatic tissue. Pollen tube reaches the embryo sac usually six hours after pollination.
(2) Penetrating pollen tube destroyes one of the two synergids of the egg apparatus.
(3) Fertilized egg starts the primary division one days after pollination.
(4) Approximately 10% of the flowers pollinated forms the regular pro-embryo.
